Laurie Hammer, a 34-year-old PGA professional from Boynton Beach, Fla., had his wife, Marlene, to thank for his win in the 10th PGA Club Professional Championship. Two weeks before the tournament, he had decided to stay home to open the winter season. But Marlene persuaded him to play, and it paid off handsomely in a Hollywood-type finish. Going into the final hole, he had a two-stroke lead over Steve Benson, a 31-year-old head professional from Glen Ellyn, Ill., who made a 30-foot birdie on the 72nd hole. That forced Hammer to make a 10-foot par putt to capture the Championship.
