The silver anniversary of the Taylor Made PGA Club Professional Championship was marked by scorching heat, heavy wind and top caliber play. Ron McDougal, a 29-yearold assistant professional at Century Country Club in Purchase, N.Y, made his second try in the Championship spectacular. He strung together four impressive rounds in the 60s, carding 6769-68-69 for a 15-under-par 273 total and a three-stroke victory over Sammy Rachels of Defuniak Springs, Fla., earning $32,000 and his first Club Professional Championship. McDougal, who was a member of the victorious U.S. PGA Cup Team two weeks earlier in Dublin, Ireland, became only the second player to record wire-to-wire victories. Larry Gilbert of Lexington, Ky., first accomplished the feat in 1981. Gilbert and McDougal battled to the wire in 1991, with Gilbert pulling out a one-stroke victory over McDougal and Gene Fieger of Bryn Mawr, Pa. McDougal's rookie appearance in the Championship in 1991 was a disappointing final round. This time, he didn't let up. McDougal opened the final round leading Gilbert and Rachels by two strokes. McDougal ran in a pair of birdie putts and never looked back. Rachels had a closing 70, and tee-time champion Gilbert managed only a final-round 2-over-par 74 to leave him at 280, tied for sixth place but extending his record top-10 finishes to nine. McDougal's final score was one stroke off the 72-hole record held by Howell Fraser, the inaugural (1968) PGA Club Professional Champion. The top 40 professionals in the 1992 Taylor Made PGA Club Professional Championship received exemptions into the 1993 PGA Championship at Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio.
