Steve Schneiter of Sandy, Utah, rallied from a four-stroke deficit to edge John DeForest of Accord, N.Y, and Bob Ford of Oakmont, Pa., by one stroke and win the 28th PGA Club Professional Championship a day before his 32nd birthday. Schneiter closed with a 4-under-par 68 by chipping from the left fringe of the l8th green at the La Quinta Mountain Course and sinking a two-foot birdie putt on the par-5, 524-yard hole. Schneiter capped a five-birdie, one-bogey performance for a 72-hole total of 10-under-par 278. Schneiter then waited 15 minutes before DeForest three-putted from 40 feet on the l8th hole and missed his bid for a playoff. Schneiter earned a first place prize of $32,000 from a total purse of $400,000. DeForest, who had a final-round 71, and Ford each earned $19,500. Ford, playing in the same threesome as Schneiter, finished with a 69 and birdied the l7th and l8th holes after making brilliant bunker approach shots. Ford was the runner-up in the 1983 PGA Club Professional Championship. The Championship featured three memorable shots - all on the La Quinta Mountain Course. Kent Dinsdale of Rolla, Mo., and Chris Tucker of Midland, N.C., recorded double eagles, while Jeffrey Roth, the 1993 Champion, posted his l Oth career hole-in-one. Stu Ingraham of Ardmore, Pa., Robby Ware of Kingwood, Texas, and Lonnie Nielsen of East Aurora, N.Y, tied for fourth at 281.
