The PGA of America Media Guide
The PGA of America Media Guide chronicles the story of our Association, from its origin in New York City in 1916 to this, our 92nd year of communicating the messages and successes of the more than 28,000 men and women PGA Professionals. The online guide continues to serve as one of the most comprehensive reference tools available in golf.
The information contained in this online guide provides the golf media with the opportunity to chart the progress of the many individuals who have helped make The PGA of America the leader in growing the game of golf.
Kicking off the golf season, our busy calendar of events opened with the 55th PGA Merchandise Show, the largest annual gathering of the golf industry, in January in Orlando, Fla.
In May, Jay Haas won the 69th Senior PGA Championship -- the most historic and prestigious event in senior golf -- at Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester, N.Y. Haas won for the second time in three years, becoming the 13th multiple Senior PGA Champion. Bill Britton, PGA director of instruction at Twin Brook Golf Center in Tinton Falls, N.J., tied for 16th to lead the 38 PGA Professionals in the field.
Scott Hebert, PGA head professional at Grand Traverse Resort & Spa in Acme, Mich., captured the 41st PGA Professional National Championship in June. Hebert finished at 12-under-par 276, and is among the 20 PGA Club Professionals to earn a berth into the 90th PGA Championship, Aug. 7-10 at Oakland Hills Country Club in Bloomfield Township, Mich.
Padraig Harrington captured the 90th PGA Championship at Oakland Hills Country Club in Bloomfield Township, Mich., in August. Harrington shot 3-under-par 277 to become the first European to win the PGA Championship since Scotland’s Tommy Armour in 1930. Ben Curtis, the 2003 British Open Champion, and Sergio Garcia tied for second, two strokes back.
In September, our country's finest Tour professionals, led by PGA of America member and Captain, Paul Azinger, will compete against Europe in the 37th Ryder Cup, one of the premier events in all of sports. The Ryder Cup will be contested at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Ky.
The PGA McGladrey Team Championship, a nationwide, grassroots best-ball amateur golf championship, brings together thousands of players nationwide with their local PGA Professionals. The National Championship will again be contested at legendary Pinehurst (N.C.) Resort in October.
Also in October, the PGA Grand Slam of Golf returns to Mid Ocean Club in Tucker’s Town, Bermuda. The PGA Grand Slam of Golf features the winners of the year’s four major championships and is the most difficult event for which to qualify.
The PGA of America event calendar also features several National Championships for its member Professionals. These competitions include two National Championships in October – the 20th Callaway Golf Senior PGA Professional Championship at Toscana Country Club, Indian Wells, Calif. and Andalusia Country Club, LaQuinta, Calif., and the 32nd TaylorMade-adidas Golf PGA Assistant Professional Championship at The PGA Golf Club, Port St. Lucie, Fla.
