Frank Dobbs of Port St. Lucie, Fla., made a 20-foot birdie putt on the 18th green, overtaking defending champion Alan Schulte of Indianapolis, Ind., and captured the TaylorMade-adidas Golf PGA Assistant Professional Championship at PGA Golf Club’s South Course in Port St. Lucie, Fla. Dobbs finished the final round of the 25th edition of the championship with a 3-under-par 69 and a 72-hole total of 7-under-par 281. He made five birdies and two bogeys during his closing round and collected a winner’s check of $5,000 from the $65,000 purse. “I was playing real solid until No. 16. I was trying a new driver and I was surprised when I overdrew the ball. I made bogey to lose a stroke there,” said Dobbs, an assistant professional at Eagle Marsh Golf Club in Jensen Beach, Fla. “On No. 17, I was one down and feeling a little tentative. I actually didn’t hit too good of a shot but it turned out pretty good and I two putted for par. “Then on the way to No. 18, I was telling my caddie this hole could change the tournament really quick. I had about 148 yards to the pin and I was hitting a six-iron. I said ‘I am going to go right for it because I have nothing to lose’ so I ripped it right at the hole. Same thing with the putt. The putt went in dead center. It doesn’t happen too often like that.” Schulte finished a stroke behind after bogeying the 18th for 73 and 6-under-par 282. “I hit some really good putts that just didn’t go in,” said Schulte, the assistant professional at Hillcrest Country Club in Indianapolis, Ind. “On the last hole, I hit my best drive of the week, but the day before influenced what I hit for my second shot. I was thinking I needed to take a few extra clubs and obviously that was too much.” Schulte’s second shot on No. 18 went over the green about 20 feet onto a hill. Todd Lancaster of Kent, Ohio, finished third at 286. By finishing the low apprentice, Lancaster, who serves at Windmill Lakes Golf Club in Ravenna, Ohio, received an invitation to play in the 2002 Australian PGA National Futures Championship. The 45-man field featured champions from the 41 PGA Sections and representatives from the Australian PGA, the PGA of Great Britain and the Canadian PGA
