Kyle Flinton of Edmond, Okla., successfully defended his title and in the process set a new scoring record of 18-under-par 270 at the 2003 TaylorMade-adidas Golf PGA Assistant Professional Championship at the PGA Golf Club (Dye Course) in Port St. Lucie, Fla. Flinton turned in a final round score of 4-under-par 68 to beat the old 72-hole record he set last year by one stroke. He collected $5,000 of the $65,000 purse and for the second time in a row was invited to the Australian PGA National Futures Championship. Flinton became the first player to win back-to-back Championships since Jim Schuman of Janesville, Wis., achieved the feat in 1996 and 1997. Loren Personett of Antioch, Tenn., who started the final round in third place, made a run at Flinton, carding a final round 5-under-par 67, which included eight birdies and three bogeys. Bob Blean of Glendale, Ariz., faltered in the final round with a 75 for a Championship total of 280. Alone in fourth place is Bob Gaus of St. Louis, Mo., who rebounded from his third round 76, to card a final round 71 for a 281 total. The 45-member field for the 27th edition of the PGA Assistant Professional Championship consisted of the Assistant Champion from each of the 41 PGA Sections, the defending Champion, Kyle Flinton of Edmond, Okla., and a representative from the Australian PGA, the PGA of Great Britain and the Canadian PGA.
