Jim Schuman of Janesville, Wis., set a course record of 65 in the third round and provided an extra dose of sparkle by making a final-round 25-foot eagle putt on the 16th hole of the South Course to win the ZEVO PGA Assistant Professional Championship at PGA Golf Club. Schuman’s final round 4-under-par 68 allowed him to set a 72-hole scoring record and finish with a record seven stroke victory in the first national championship contested at the PGA of America’s first owned and operated public golf facility near Port St. Lucie, Fla. A 33 year old apprentice professional at Maple Bluff Country Club in Madison, Wis., Schuman had a 72 hole total of 12-under-par 276 to break the 1991 scoring record of 278 by Kim Thompson of American Fork, Utah. Schuman finished seven strokes ahead of defending champion Bruce Zabriski of Rye, N.Y., who closed with a 68 and 283 total. Schuman’s victory margin bettered by two strokes the previous record shared by John Jackson of Scottsdale, Ariz. (1980) and Ted O’Rourke of Hanover, Mass. (1981). Schuman earned a first place price of $5,000 from a total purse of $65,000. John Fesperman of Sea Island, Ga. was alone in third place at 284 after tying for the low final round score in Championship history at 5-under-par 67. Chip Sullivan of Salem, Va., Scott Smith of Daphne, Ala., and Gordon Vietmeier of Pittsburg, Pa., tied for sixth at 286. Overall, the field averaged 74.4 strokes on the South Course.
