Randall McCracken of Destin, Fla., who played his best golf through 54 holes of the 23rd PGA Assistant Professional Championship, paid homage to Mother Nature, for allowing him to be a national champion. Bands of rain pelted PGA Golf Club’s South Course on a gloomy Halloween afternoon and forced the cancellation of the final 18-hole round. The 28-year-old McCracken rode a third-round 4-under-par 68 for what became a winning total of 5-under-par 211. An apprentice professional at Emerald Bay in Destin, Fla., McCracken is the second consecutive member of the Dixie PGA Section to win the national championship. He earned a first-place prize of $5,000 from a total purse of $65,000. Nick Klassen of St. George, Utah, finished a stroke back at 212. Bryn Parry of Vancouver, B.C., Tom Harding of South Lyon, Mich., and Bill Porter of Quincy, Wash., tied for third at 215. The low 25 finishers and ties earned a berth in the second stage of qualifying for the 2000 PGA Tour. McCracken had lost five strokes through the first nine holes of the final round before play was terminated at 1:30 p.m. Klassen and Parry had moved into a share of the lead at that point at 3-under-par. “You have to feel excited but undeserving at the same time,” said McCracken. “I was not playing good today and I feel I really don’t deserve to win this tournament. But every now and then you get a break and I got that break today. I don’t know whom to thank for this decision other than Mother Nature. I am excited to be here as Champion.” Parry was bidding to become the first international champion in event history. He had turned in the week’s lowest round of 66. In the final round, he grabbed a one-stroke lead with four birdies on the first eight holes before bogeying the par-4 ninth as the rain set in. The 24th PGA Assistant Professional Championship featured contestants from 32 states and 41 PGA Sections, along with the national assistant champions from Australia, Canada and Great Britain.
