Mickelson led or shared the lead throughout a steamy week in Springfield, N.J., and took advantage when his challengers opened the door. His second major championship came on a Monday after 12 players were unable to finish a day earlier due to a passing thunderstorm.

Mickelson’s final-round 2-over-par 72 was good for a winning total of 4-under-par 276, a stroke better than Denmark’s Thomas Bjorn and Australia’s Steve Elkington, the 1995 PGA Champion who was making his bid for a return to his old form.

Both Elkington and Bjorn missed birdie attempts on the 18th hole, with Bjorn’s 20-footer spinning around the right edge of the cup. Elkington’s missed 10-footer gave him a 71 and Bjorn closed with a 72.

Two-time PGA Champion Tiger Woods, who already owns the year’s Masters and British Open titles, finished fourth with Davis Love III at 278. Woods concluded his work with a 68 on Sunday before the thunderstorm rolled by Baltusrol. Love returned Monday to the course and finished five holes, posting a 74.

Defending Champion Vijay Singh missed a 10-foot par putt on the 16th when play resumed Monday, and bogeyed the 18th hole for a 74 and share 10th place.

It was the third Monday weather-related finish in PGA Championship history. The Championship was last decided on a Monday in 1986, when Bob Tway birdied the 18th hole at Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio, with a greenside bunker pitch; and in 1976, when Dave Stockton captured his second title at Congressional Country Club.

The victory was Mickelson’s fourth of the season and cemented his position in major championship history. He is the 19th player to win multiple PGA Championships.
