Paul Azinger shed an unofficial media label as the "best player never to have won a major championship," finishing atop a leader board that included players who won a combined 23 major championships. The lanky 6' 2" Bradenton , Fla., resident birdied four of the last seven holes to post a 12-under-par 272 for a back-nine Inverness record 30. His 72-hole score forced a playoff with Greg Norman, a runner-up at Inverness Club in 1986. Azinger survived after two-putting from eight feet on the second playoff hole. Norman's par attempt from four feet above the hole rimmed in and out of the hole. Fiji native Vijay Singh became the 15th player to shoot 63 in a major championship, posting the course-record score in the second round.
