Raymond Floyd survived an outburst of social turbulence focused on Gary Player, and gritty stretch drive by the South African, to win the 51st PGA Championship by one stroke. Floyd took a one-stroke lead in the second round and extended it to five strokes on Saturday, the same day a group of militant protesters erupted onto the golf course while Player was preparing to putt on the 10th green. Player, however, staged a rally in the final round, carrying him within a stroke of Floyd after Floyd bogeyed the13th and 15th holes. Player bogeyed the 16th while Floyd ran in a 35-foot birdie putt. Player's birdie at the 17th fell short of catching Floyd, who posted a winning 276.
