Dave Stockton, a 28-year-old California native, came out of the pack in the third round to fire a 66 and take a three-stroke lead. In the final round he held off late charges by Arnold Palmer and Bob Murphy despite a near disaster at the 13th hole where he put his second shot in a pond and then lofted a wedge shot to within inches of the hole to pull out a bogey. He finished two in front of Murphy and Palmer. For Palmer, it became the third time he finished in a second-place tie in this, the only major championship he has never won.
