For the first time, a major championship was decided in a sudden-death playoff, as Lanny Wadkins made a six-foot par putt on the third extra hole to beat Gene Littler, who led from the first round. Wadkins began the final round six shots behind Littler and was still five behind with nine holes to play, despite two front-nine eagles. Littler bogeyed five of the first six holes on the back nine, allowing Jack Nicklaus to tie him at the 15th hole, with 27-year-old Wadkins just one shot back. Nicklaus bogeyed the par-3 17th and Wadkins pulled into a tie with Littler with his only birdie of the day at the 18th.
