Followed up with rounds of 66, 72 and 71 for a "wire-to-wire" victory in spite of a last-day charge by Jack Nicklaus, A brilliant 6-under-par 65 provided Hal Sutton the opening-round lead. The 1982 Rookie of the Year who added his fourth second-place PGA Championship finish to his record-tying five PGA victories. The one-stroke win led to Sutton's No. 1 money-winning year and his first PGA Player of the Year Award.
