Three former PGA Champions, Lee Trevino (age 44), Gary Player (48), and Lanny Wadkins (35), staged one of the most exciting Championships in PGA Championship history. Wadkins tied for the first-day lead with 1982 winner Raymond Floyd and Mike Reid with a 4-under-par 68, and tied for the second-round lead at 137 with Trevino and Player. Player leaped into contention with a 63, the lowest single round in PGA Championship history. Trevino, wielding a hot putter he purchased a few weeks earlier in Holland, took the lead on Saturday with a 67 and on Sunday turned back every bid Wadkins and Player could offer until he walked off the 72nd green with a four-shot victory at 273.
