Ed Sabo of Tequesta, Fla., who admits he is restless sleeping with the lead in a golf tournament, turned in a near- flawless 3-under-par 69 at PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Fla., for a four-stroke victory and his second consecutive PGA Senior Club Professional Championship. The 52-year-old teaching professional at Bear Lakes Country Club in West Palm Beach, Fla., matched his year-old 72-hole record of 13-under-par 275 and joined Tom Joyce of Huntington, N.Y. (1990-91) as the only back-to-back champions in the 13-year history of the national championship. The field featured three tournament "rookies" in 2001. PGA Club Professional Champion John Traub of Detroit, Mich.; Jay Overton of Palm Harbor, Fla.; and Brian Lowe of Catskill, N.Y.; who all turned 50 within the past year, each made a statement with thier clubs, but they couldn't catch Sabo. The Tequesta resident earned a $16,000 first-place check from a total purse of $210,000. Traub, the head professional at Detroit Golf Club tied the 18-hole final-round record of 66, and shared second place at 279 with Overton, the head professional at Westin Innisbrook Resort of Tarpon Springs, who closed with a 72. Lowe, the head professional of The Catskill Club, birdied the first hole to tie Sabo before stumbling in with a 76 and a share of ninth place.
