Mike San Filippo of Hobe Sound, Fla., captured the Leo F. Fraser trophy with an 8-under-par 280 at the 17th annual Callaway Golf PGA Senior Club Professional Championship at PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Fla., in a dramatic playoff finish over Darrell Kestner of Glen Cove, N.Y. San Filippo and Kestner entered the final 18-holes today dead-even in a tie for second place. “I didn’t get off to the greatest start, but my round turned around at the end,” said San Filippo, who recorded a bogey on No. 3 and back-to-back birdies on Nos. 4 and 5. “On the eighteenth hole, I was down one-stroke and was in-between my yardages on my second shot, but I knew I had to hit it close. I left myself with a difficult 3-foot putt that was a left to right slider and I was fortunate that I hit a solid putt, which then allowed for the playoff.” Kestner, who finished in a tie for eighth place in 2004, had a 5-foot downhill par putt on No. 18 to win his first PGA Senior Club Professional Championship, but his putt lipped out, forcing the playoff. Both San Filippo and Kestner posted par’s on the first playoff hole and Kestner three-putted on the second playoff hole for a bogey, while San Filippo made a par putt for the win. “Mike (San Filippo) and I were both hitting extremely well down the stretch, but I unfortunately missed the short putt on eighteen, yet remained optimistic,” said Kestner, the PGA Head Professional at Deepdale Golf Course in Manhasset, N.Y., who was awarded the 2004 PGA Senior Club Professional of the Year. “It was a great battle today and I am very fortunate to have had a chance to win, but I was definitely out-played.” With the win today, San Filippo joins Ed Sabo (2000-01) of Tequesta, Fla., Roger Kennedy (1992- 94) of Pompano Beach, Fla., and Tom Joyce (1990-91) of Huntington, N.Y., as a two-time winner. “It is truly an honor to be considered among the group of multiple winners as they are all wonderful players,” said San Filippo, a PGA Member for 24 years, who earns $20,000 with the win. “My career and life would definitely not be where it is today if I had not become a PGA Member. I am extremely proud to be a member of the association that does exceptional work for the game of golf.” Bob Ford of Jupiter, Fla., began his final-round in a tie for fourth place, two-strokes off the pace. He fired a 1-under-par 71 for a four-day total of 6-under-par 282, to stand alone in third place. “I was in the hunt early on but gave it away in the middle of the back nine which is very disappointing since I played solid all week,” said Ford, PGA Master Professional at Seminole Golf Club in Juno Beach, Fla., and at Oakmont Country Club in Pa. “I missed a 6-iron into number twelve for a bogey, a 7-iron into number fourteen for a bogey, and a wedge into number fifteen for a bogey. The three shots really hurt my round and I wasn’t up to the task today.” Third round leader, Bill Schumaker of Columbia City, Ind., shot a 3-over par 75 to finish alone in fifth place with a 4-under-par 284. Kim Thompson of Salt Lake City, Utah won a playoff for the 35th spot to earn a berth in the 2006 Senior PGA Championship, May 25-28, at Oak Tree Golf Club in Edmond, Okla. For the fourth consecutive year, Callaway Golf was the title sponsor.
