Bob Irving of Carefree, Ariz., kept himself hazard free on the rain-soaked Ibis Golf & Country Club in West Palm Beach, Fla., and recorded a final-round 2-under-par 70 to cap a three-stroke, come-from-behind victory in The PGA Senior Club Professional Championship. The Championship which was shortened by one round and extended a day due to two days of heavy rain evolved into perhaps the most dramatic in the event's history. Irving, a 51-year-old former director of golf at The Boulders in Carefree, Ariz., finished with a 54-hole total of 7-under-par 209, three strokes better than Randy Glover of Hilton Head, S.C., whose final-round 69 included a hole-in-one on No. 13, a par-3, 155-yard hole. Glover's ninth career ace temporarily tied him for the lead, but he couldn't continue the momentum on the back nine. Irving, who finished fifth in the Championship last year, began the final round three strokes behind and took the lead for good with a par-saving chip to within a foot of the flagstick on the difficult par-4, 392-yard 15th hole. He earned $14,000 from a total purse of $185,000. Bill Garrett of Grapevine, Texas, the 1994 runner-up and a third-place finisher in 1993, tied for third at 213, along with second-round leader Dennis Bradley of Singer Island, Fla., Don Maddox of Tulsa, Okla., and Art Proctor of Edmond, Okla. Bradley, Irving, Glover, and Maddox all shared the lead at one point during the final 14 holes, and along with Proctor earned spots in the second round of qualifying for the 1996 Senior PGA Tour.
