John Brott of Talladega, Ala., rallied with four birdies in a five-hole stretch on the back nine for a 3-under-par 69 to earn a four-stroke victory in The PGA Senior Club Professional Championship at Ibis Golf & country club in West Palm Beach, Fla. Brott, 50, a PGA head professional at Timber Ridge Golf Club in Talladega, won his first national title with a 72-hole total of 9-under-par 279. Two-time champion Tom Joyce of Huntington, N.Y., was runner-up after a bogey on the18th hole left him with a 69 and 283.Brott earned a first-place prize of $14,000 from a total purse of $185,000. Brott was one of five players who shared the lead early in the final round, but became the only player to break through the pack. He overcame bogeys on the seventh and 10th holes by making birdie putts on the 12th, 15th, 16th and 17th holes. Included in Brott's birdie barrage was a 50-foot putt from the front fringe on the par-3, 197-yard 16th. "I kept to my game plan and was able to be detached from what was going on around me and concentrate on every shot," said Brott, the Dixie PGA Section Senior Champion. "I'm the last person who expected to be holding the trophy, but today my putter started working." Among the low 55 scorers earning berths in the 1997 PGA Seniors' Championship was Dick Goetz of Richardson, Texas, whose final-round 67 tied for the lowest final round score. Goetz arrived at the Championship having recovered from a recent heart attack.
