: Returning to the Championship's original 54-hole format of 1937, Wm. Teacher & Sons Ltd. of Glasgow, Scotland, provided a $5,000 purse, with competition being expanded to three rounds. Gene Sarazen of Germantown, N.Y., posted a 2-under-par 214,winning by two over former winner Al Watrous and Perry Del Vecchio. Sarazen earned $1,000 for the win that was witnessed by 5,000 spectators during the final round.
